Advantages of Side-Hinged Garage Doors
12/15/2013 Back To BlogSide-hinged is probably the most traditional type of garage door hinges and although consumers today have plenty of choices, they would still choose these doors for their homes or businesses. As long as you have the space for them, they can be an excellent solution since they have many benefits. They are actually very practical and their mechanism is not much different from the other systems. They have handles and they can lock, used easily by pedestrians and come in different materials and designs.
Why choose side hinged doors
Forget about lifting doors! These ones open outwards or can be folded even up to three – four different panels. This way, garage door panel replacement won't be your only solution should the door is partially damaged, since you can replace only one leaf. Some people would prefer to get one small and one large leaf of panels, so that they can open whichever is necessary in every occasion. This way, you can open them slightly if you want to walk in or out on foot and you won't have to worry over the possibility of collapsing panels.
Traditionally, these doors are made mostly of wood. This can be an exceptional look for your garage as long as you are ready to invest in expensive timber. The most expensive materials, like cedar wood for example, will be harder and, thus, more resistant. Don't settle for cheap timber that it will soon warp and won't close properly. Of course, today manufacturers use other materials, too. Steel would be a great solution as long as it is galvanized, so that you won't have similar safety problems and need for frequent garage door repair to avoid erosion.
When you are ready to replace the existing garage door, make sure you get insulated hinged panels. They can actually offer high thermal insulation as well as sound, since they will be thicker, stronger and more reliable. Just remember that heavier doors will need stronger, perhaps larger garage door parts to maintain balance and stability.
